Solving the Problem: Heroes in the Workshop
Thanks to the heroes at Retifica e Auto Peças Raffagnato, what seemed like the end of our trip became a new beginning. Guaíra is located at the entrance to the "Pantanal of Paraná," a rich biodiversity corridor with over 200 islands and an abundance of wildlife, making it a unique natural wonder!
The city was once home to the immense Sete Quedas (Seven Falls), considered the world’s largest waterfall by volume. Sadly, in 1982, these majestic falls were submerged by the waters of the Itaipu Dam, a massive hydroelectric project.
Guaíra's history dates back to the 16th century with the arrival of Spanish explorers and Jesuit missionaries. The region was a hub for early settlements and was a site of frequent conflicts between the Spanish and Portuguese explorers known as bandeirantes.
The modern development of Guaíra is deeply linked to the exploitation of yerba mate. In the late 19th century, the Companhia Matte Larangeira established a major presence, turning the city into a key industrial and commercial hub for the mate industry.
The name "Guaíra" comes from the indigenous Tupi-Guarani language, meaning "place difficult to access" or "hiding place." This name was inspired by the treacherous Sete Quedas waterfalls that made river navigation nearly impossible.
Guaíra is located at the entrance of the "Paraná Pantanal," a biodiversity corridor with over 200 islands. This unique ecosystem makes the area a hub for nature tourism and fishing.
Guaíra is a border city, located directly across the Paraná River from its Paraguayan twin city, Salto del Guairá. This location makes it a significant point for trade and culture between Brazil and Paraguay.
